The first transfer of my master tapes took place some 10 or so years ago right after I joined Dime. The transfer was not azimuth or pitch adjusted, I did make an attempt at boosting the vocals. Fast forward 10 years and I would consider this the first proper transfer. Azimuth and pitch adjusted on proper equipment. The Clash played 5 US Festival Warm-Up gigs to break in new drummer Pete Howard before playing in front of the biggest crowd of their soon to implode career. May 18 Amarillo, TX Civic Center Auditorium May 19 Memorial Auditorium, Wichita Falls Texas May 22 Majestic Theatre, San Antonio Texas May 25 El Paso Civic Center Theatre, El Paso, Texas May 26 Tucson Activity Center, Tucson, Arizona I was planning on also taping Amarillo but those plans fell through and sadly there is no capture of that performance. Of the five confirmed gigs, three are known to exist and I captured two, Wichita Falls and San Antonio. Tensions within the band were high in early 1983, including tension with new drummer Pete Howard who was reportedly getting paid a weekly wage to drum for one of the biggest bands in the world. From the audio evidence of the three shows and attending two of them this tension was not evident on stage. The band thrived on stage playing in small markets. The Memorial Auditorium held 3000 and did not appear to be sold out. I was living in Oklahoma City at the time, Wichita Falls was a little over 2 hours away. I met up with dime member 'waxdoll' for this show after which we drove down to San Antonio to catch that show. As I recall, security was essentially non existant, with mostly 60 somethings ushering and I just don't remember any real security personel. The crowd was likely fans from Dallas and Oklahoma City with some locals thrown in. As the intro started a large part of the crowd rushed to the front of the stage. This was perfect as I parked myself dead center some 30 feet or so from the stage with very few people around me. Some rarely played songs find their way into this mini tour's setlist and they sounded fantastic. Most specifically the rarely played "Lost In The Supermarket", "The Sound Of Sinners" and "Death Or Glory" are highlights. In my last posting of this show I noted I used a Sony D6 to record this show, this was the second show I ever recorded and thinking back I'm not sure I had the D6 yet, I had moved to the D6 further into the summer for sure but this capture may not be with the D6. I cannot remember the specific deck I used, the mic was a Sony ECM939T and whichever deck it was it preformed admirably on this night. Off to San Antonio and a very different much more tense atmosphere compared to the Wichita Falls show, a new transfer of that capture will follow shortly. mjk5510
